The winter holiday season is in full swing, and in the madness it can be easy to let your workouts fall to the side. In addition to the increased calories we all partake in this time of year, missing your workouts can lead to an even bigger hill to climb come New Year's when it's time to get back into shape.
Part of the reason it's so difficult to get in the gym around the holiday's is we're all so busy. Between shopping, holiday parties, hosting guests, and traveling, going to the gym can be the last thing we have time to do.
Here is a quick list of a few ways you can get in a workout during the hectic holiday season.
1. Park Far Away. Parking lots can be insanely crowded during the holidays. Turn that into a positive by parking farthest away from the entrance as possible. With the many trips you make to the store this season, the calories burned will add up.
2. Visit Your Local Ice Rink. For some, going ice skating during the holiday season is a must. For every hour you ice skate, you can burn about 600 calories, the same number of calories burned when you run 5 miles.
3. Take Advantage of the Closed High School Track. Most high schools will be closed for at least a week in December, and many of them host a nice track and stadium that is open to the public when school is closed. On your way to the mall swing by the stadium and run the steps. You'll be glad you did when your having that second slice of pumpkin pie.
4. Exercise with Family. Hanging out with your family during the holiday's doesn't have to be only eating and arguing over politics. Take advantage of being in a large group by organizing a game of basketball or touch football with the entire family.
